Seminar: The internet and the promotion of linguistic diversity

The UNESCO Chair on World Language Heritage of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) organizes the next 17th of May 2012, from 3.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in Bilbao (BBK-UPV/EHUko Esperientzia Gelak, Banco de Espaa Str. No. 2), the Seminar "The Internet and the Promotion of Linguistic Diversity", with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of promoting linguistic diversity on the Internet.

For minorized languages to be present on the Internet, understood at its broadest sense, involves, on the one hand, a great challenge, but on the other hand, it is of great interest as a resource for their conservation in an increasingly globalized (more homogeneous) world.

The UNESCO Chair on World Language Heritage of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU),, in its efforts to disseminate, educate and raise awareness on linguistic diversity (nearby and distant), is organizing this seminar on the special interest of the use of the Internet for promoting and conserving this intangible human heritage. To do so, 6 experts from outside the Basque Country will be presenting their papers, showing us other realities and solutions. Four of them will be in person and two via videoconference. To conclude, there will be a discussion panel with the participation of Luistxo Fernandez, a Basque expert on internationalization and localization issues as well as in Internet communications.

The event is of free admission.
