UNESCO Etxea participates in the 4th water for development forum devoted to the human right to water

Natalia Uribe, Head of UNESCO Etxeas Human Right to Water Department, was invited to give a conference on the Human Right to Water and Development Cooperation at the Forum organised by the Canal Foundation in Madrid on 4th June.

The Canal Foundation has organised every year since 2006 the Water for Development Forum as a meeting point for the most important agents working internationally in the water and sanitation sector. This year the specific subject that was studied was the Human Right to Water. The current situation was analysed as was the worldwide progress on this right, its legal recognition and some international initiatives aimed at its implementation: Spain, Latin America and South Africa.

UNESCO Etxea presented the situation of the lack of access to safe water and basic sanitation in the world and its massive implications for human rights. The causes were examined of the global water crisis, which are basically political and social. Faced with this situation, it is essential to make water a human right, which is why the meaning and implications of this right were presented, as well as the role of development cooperation in its promotion and implementation.
