The commitment is signed for Euskadis support of the water-related Millennium Development Goals

Last 6th April, the General Director of URA the Basque Water Agency, Tomas Epalza, and the Coordinator of the United Nations Development Programmes Environmental and Energy Department, Veeerle Vanddweerd, signed a collaboration agreement between both institutions. Signing this agreement effectively starts the Basque initiative to support the water and sanitation Millennium Development Goals (MGD).

This initiative is based on dedicating 5% of the water tax to support access to water and sanitation in Sub-Saharan Africa, in this case, through the UNDP projects to improve water governance.

UNESCO Etxea and URA have collaborated over the last two years in the conceptualisation and development of this initiative which has had the express support from the United Nations Decade of Action Water, source of life 2005-2015. The innovative feature of this initiative, which brings together the internal environmental challenges of the Basque Autonomous Region with the global challenges, has been recognised on numerous occasions by the United Nations, and the Basque case study has been included in the last World Water Development Report prepared by UNESCO.
