The water tax in the basque autonomous region has been passed

On 4th November the Cabinet of the Basque Government passed the Decree to regulate the Water Tax. This environmental tax on excess water consumption will come into effect in 2009, although domestic users will be exempt from paying it in its first phase.

With the approval of this Decree the Basque initiative to support the water and sanitation Millennium Goals is materialised and comes into effect. It was passed by the Government Cabinet on 29th July with the aim of dedicating 5% of that collected with this Water Tax to support water and sanitation projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This innovative initiative, in which UNESCO Etxea has assisted since its conception, will be developed through an agreement with the UNDP, financing projects to improve water governance in Africa, one of the regions furthest away from achieving target 10 of the Millennium Goals.

DECRETO 181/2008, de 4 de noviembre, por el que se aprueba el Reglamento del Rgimen Econmico-Financiero del Canon del Agua.
