Summer course: "The Challenges of Linguistic Diversity. Examples of the Linguistic Richness in Mexico and Colombia.

The UNESCO Chair on World Language Heritage of the University of the Basque Country (UPV / EHU) organizes the next 19th and 20th of July 2012 in Bilbao, in the Bizkaia Aretoa (Auditorium), Arriaga Hall (Abandoibarra avenue 3), a summer course entitled "The Challenges of Linguistic Diversity. Examples of the Linguistic Richness in Mexico and Colombia.

This course will involve experts in indigenous languages of Mexico and Colombia such as: Jon Landaburu (Linguapax Award 2012), Javier Lpez (Director of  the National Institute for Indigenous Languages of Mexico, INALI) and Andoni Barrea (Professor at the University of Salamanca).

Despite the great linguistic diversity found in the world (6000 languages?), the number of speakers of most languages decreases every day. The major languages, on the contrary, are increasing their number of speakers and, in this way, the language shift happening in recent years is worse than ever in terms of language loss.

On the other hand, linguistic diversity in both our near environment and the world is becoming increasingly evident - the immigration approached us speakers of many different languages- but also unknown; there is no awareness of the value of this diversity. Besides, we do not really know where, how and why languages disappear and although there are theories and hypotheses for these cases, we always encounter unexpected situations.

Mexico and Colombia are two of the worlds most linguistically diverse areas; their linguistic communities have been involved in some different and interesting evolutions and deserve to be known.

From this approach, the aims of this course are:

  • Raising awareness of the linguistic diversity in America, especially in Mexico and Colombia.

  • Giving information on the efforts to recover the languages of some of these linguistic communities.

  • Promoting and raising awareness of the value of diversity, both here and abroad.
