UNESCO Etxea at the 2nd conference on water, drought and conflicts

On 6th and 7th November the Spanish Red Cross organised the second Conference on Water, Drought and Conflicts in San Lorenzo del El Escorial (Madrid), at which UNESCO Etxea participated with a water as a human right focus.

The conference, titled Cada gota de agua, un arma de vida (Each drop of water, a weapon of life) analysed all of the areas relating to water and armed conflicts. Lack of water was presented as a problem for life, which destroys opportunities, weakens peoples dignity and encourages inequality. In conflict areas, the effects of this crisis are even more devastating as often this resource is taken as an element for war, exerting greater pressure on the affected population.

Different roundtables tackled the water crisis and its impact, water management as a tool to avoid conflicts, the issue from the International Humanitarian Law perspective, as well as the role of the media. Natalia Uribe, Head of UNESCO Etxeas Human Right to Water Department, set out the meaning of the human right to water and how this right can be a decisive tool for achieving citizen participation, international support and the political commitment to treat the issue with the urgency that it deserves.
